Tirta empul Temple, Tampaksiring

Tirta Empul Temple, located in the village of Manukaya near Tampaksiring, about 30 minutes from Ubud, is one of Bali’s most sacred water temples. Built in 962 AD during the Warmadewa dynasty, this temple is famous for its holy spring water, which is believed to have purifying and healing powers. The name Tirta Empul means “holy water spring,” referring to the natural spring that continuously supplies crystal-clear water to the temple’s purification pools.
Visitors come here to experience the melukat ritual — a traditional Balinese cleansing ceremony. In this ritual, people bathe under a series of stone spouts, each representing different blessings such as purification, prosperity, and protection. The process is deeply spiritual, and both locals and tourists are welcome to join, provided they wear proper temple attire, including a sarong and selendang (waist sash).
Inside the temple complex, you’ll also find beautiful courtyards, traditional Balinese architecture, and shrines dedicated to Hindu gods Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma. The temple is surrounded by peaceful natural scenery, including lush greenery and ponds filled with koi fish, creating a tranquil atmosphere perfect for reflection and prayer.
