Tanah lot temple, Tabanan

Tanah Lot Temple is one of Bali’s most iconic landmarks, famous for its dramatic seaside setting and stunning sunsets. Located in Tabanan Regency, about 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta, the temple stands majestically on a large offshore rock that becomes surrounded by the sea during high tide. The name Tanah Lot means “Land in the Sea,” perfectly describing its unique location and mystical beauty.

Built in the 16th century by the Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha, Tanah Lot is dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea. According to legend, Nirartha chose this spot for its powerful spiritual energy and instructed local fishermen to build a temple here. The temple is an important part of Balinese Hinduism and one of the seven sea temples that protect the island from evil spirits.

Visitors can walk across the causeway to the temple area during low tide, while at high tide, the temple appears to float on the water — creating a picture-perfect view. The surrounding cliffs offer panoramic viewpoints, souvenir shops, and restaurants where you can enjoy the sunset with a beautiful ocean backdrop.

Tanah Lot is not just a religious site but also a cultural symbol of Bali’s harmony between nature and spirituality.
