Besakih Temple (Mother temple of Bali)

Besakih Temple, known as Pura Besakih, is the largest and most important Hindu temple complex in Bali. Located on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest and most sacred volcano, it is often called the “Mother Temple” of Bali. This vast temple complex consists of more than 80 individual temples, with the main one being Pura Penataran Agung, dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Dating back over a thousand years, Besakih Temple serves as a central place of worship for Balinese Hindus. It plays a key role during major religious ceremonies and festivals, attracting devotees from all over the island. The temple’s terraced design reflects the Balinese philosophy of harmony between humans, nature, and the gods. Visitors can explore a series of stone steps, ornate gateways, and intricately carved shrines set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Agung.

The atmosphere at Besakih is deeply spiritual and majestic, especially during prayer times when locals dressed in traditional attire bring offerings and incense. The temple offers panoramic views of Bali’s lush countryside and volcano landscape, making it both a cultural and scenic highlight.
